The Principality of Monaco

The House of Grimaldi has ruled Monaco since 1297, making them one of Europe's oldest ruling dynasties.

History

The House of Grimaldi took control of Monaco in 1297 when François Grimaldi, disguised as a Franciscan monk, seized the fortress. Since then, the Grimaldi family has ruled the small principality on the Mediterranean.

Modern Monaco

Prince Rainier III (1949-2005) transformed Monaco from a declining gambling resort into a glamorous and prosperous principality. His marriage to Hollywood star Grace Kelly in 1956 brought international attention.

Prince Albert II has reigned since 2005. He is engaged in environmental protection and has founded a foundation to combat climate change.
