Crown Princess Victoria Visits a Mussel Farm in the Archipelago

The day before Baltic Sea Day, Crown Princess Victoria headed out to a mussel farm off Dalarö in the Stockholm archipelago, where she saw how the mussels contribute to a cleaner Baltic Sea.
Crown Princess Victoria donned a life vest and work gloves on Wednesday and headed out to a mussel farm off Dalarö in the Stockholm archipelago. The visit took place together with the organisations Race for the Baltic and Ecopelag, the day before Baltic Sea Day on August 27.

Mussel farming is highlighted as a resource-efficient way of producing food while contributing to a healthier Baltic Sea: the mussels need neither feed, fertiliser nor fresh water to grow. As they grow they absorb nitrogen and phosphorus from the water, and when the mussels are harvested, those nutrients are removed from the sea, counteracting eutrophication.

Ecopelag has been developing large-scale mussel farming in the Baltic Sea since 2016. The Crown Princess, who holds the ocean close to her heart and is an active advocate for the UN Sustainable Development Goals, followed the work on board with great enthusiasm.
