The King and Queen Attend Carmen at the Salzburg Festival

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia's opera stay in Salzburg continued on Wednesday evening, when the royal couple took their seats at the Großes Festspielhaus for Georges Bizet's "Carmen", one of the highlights of this year's Salzburg Festival.

This year's Carmen is a brand new production by the Belgian director and choreographer Gabriela Carrizo, known from the company Peeping Tom. Teodor Currentzis conducted the Utopia Orchestra, with the Lithuanian star soprano Asmik Grigorian in the title role and tenor Jonathan Tetelman as Don José.

Queen Silvia wore a purple evening gown by Georg et Arend with a floral detail on the shoulder, which she paired with a crystal necklace by Swarovski.

Among the other guests in the audience were Prince Leopold of Bavaria and his wife Uschi, as well as Prince Alexander zu Schaumburg-Lippe and his wife Princess Mahkameh, who also attended the opening of the Amadeus Weekend earlier the same week.

The King and Queen are in Salzburg for the Amadeus Weekend, the annual cultural weekend during the festival that gathers royals and cultural figures from across Europe. The Salzburg Festival is regarded as the world's leading festival for classical music and opera, held every summer in the city of Mozart's birth.
