The King and Queen Send Greetings on the Faroe Islands' National Day

King Frederik and Queen Mary congratulated the Faroese on their national day Ólavsøka, sharing photos from last year's visit to the islands.
On Wednesday 29 July, the Faroe Islands celebrate their national day, Ólavsøka, and to mark the occasion King Frederik and Queen Mary shared a greeting on Instagram: "Happy Ólavsøka to all the people of the Faroe Islands. We wish everyone some wonderful days, wherever you may be celebrating."

The greeting was accompanied by two photos from the royal couple's visit to the Faroe Islands in June last year. Ólavsøka is celebrated on July 28 and 29 in the capital Tórshavn, where the Faroese gather in their colourful national costumes.
The name Ólavsøka means "Saint Olaf's Wake" and commemorates the Norwegian king Olaf Haraldsson, Saint Olaf, who fell at the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030. After his death, Olaf was canonised and became Norway's patron saint, and in the Middle Ages the Faroe Islands were part of the Kingdom of Norway.
