Nine fairy tales in 25 years: Tivoli honours Queen Margrethe

Queen Margrethe has designed costumes and sets for nine productions at Tivoli. She has now received the amusement park's jubilee medal for 25 years of work.

Queen Margrethe on Sunday received Tivoli's jubilee medal for 25 years as a costume and set designer at the Copenhagen amusement park. Tivoli's CEO Susanne Mørch Koch presented the medal at a private ceremony at Fredensborg Palace.

The medal shows Georg Carstensen, the man who founded Tivoli in 1843.

Nine productions in 25 years

The Queen made her Tivoli debut in 2001, designing costumes and sets for "Kærlighed i Skarnkassen" (Love in the Dustbin), based on Hans Christian Andersen. Since then she has helped create nine productions. Seven of them were staged at the Pantomime Theatre, Tivoli's small open-air stage, and two in the Tivoli Concert Hall.

Many of them are Andersen fairy tales, such as "Thumbelina", "The Tinderbox", "The Swineherd", "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" and "The Snow Queen". There are also "Cinderella", "Clumsy Hans" and "The Nutcracker". Several of the productions have returned year after year, and "The Tinderbox" was staged at the Pantomime Theatre again this year.

"Queen Margrethe has had a truly unique significance for Tivoli's performing arts," Susanne Mørch Koch says in a press release from Tivoli. She says the Queen's imagination and understanding of fairy tales and theatre have given the productions a fine artistic expression, and that her contribution has become part of Tivoli's cultural heritage.

Three dancers also honoured

On the same day, three ballet dancers from the Pantomime Theatre received medals. Tori Cooper and Allan Clausen have danced there for 25 years, and Tommy Edvardsen for no less than 50 years. All three have performed in many of the productions Queen Margrethe has designed. Together, the four jubilarians celebrated 125 years at Tivoli.

Audiences will soon be able to see more of her work. "The Nutcracker", with costumes and sets by Queen Margrethe, returns to the Tivoli Concert Hall from 26 November.
