The Danish Royal House

The Danish monarchy is one of the world's oldest and can be traced back to Gorm the Old in the 900s. The current royal family belongs to the House of Glücksburg.

History

The Danish monarchy is one of the oldest in the world, with roots going back to the Viking Age. The current dynasty, the House of Glücksburg, began with Christian IX in 1863. He became known as 'the father-in-law of Europe' because his children married into royal houses across Europe.

From Christian IX to Today

Christian IX had six children who all made remarkable marriages. His daughter Alexandra became Queen of the United Kingdom, and his son George became King of Greece.

King Frederik X ascended the throne on January 14, 2024, after his mother, Queen Margrethe II, abdicated. Queen Margrethe II reigned for over 50 years and was one of the most popular monarchs in Danish history.
