Princess Désirée of Sweden Has Died
King Carl Gustaf's sister, Princess Désirée, has passed away. She was 87 years old.
The Swedish Royal Court announced on Tuesday, January 21, 2026, that Princess Désirée has passed away. She died at her home at Koberg in Västergötland and was 87 years old.

In a statement from the Swedish Royal Court, King Carl Gustaf said: "My sister Princess Désirée has passed away. A place in Sweden that meant a lot to my sister is the Silfverschiöld family home in Västergötland."

The princess trained as a preschool teacher and later studied textile design. She was known for her creative and artistic abilities.

After the wedding, the couple settled at the family estate Koberg in Västergötland, where the princess lived for the rest of her life. Baron Niclas Silfverschiöld passed away in 2017.
Princess Désirée is survived by three children and several grandchildren. She was the second eldest of King Carl Gustaf's four sisters who are still alive.

Born at Haga Palace
Princess Désirée was born on June 2, 1938, at Haga Palace as the fourth of five children of Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Sibylla. She grew up together with her sisters Margaretha, Birgitta, and Christina, as well as her younger brother Carl Gustaf who later became king.

Wedding at Storkyrkan
On June 5, 1964, Princess Désirée married Baron Niclas Silfverschiöld at Storkyrkan in Stockholm. Around four million Swedes watched the ceremony on TV. The couple had three children together: Carl, Christina Louise, and Hélène.
