The dinner took place in connection with the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs' consul meeting, which brings together more than 300 honorary consuls. They assist Danish embassies worldwide with citizen services, trade promotion and cultural activities. In recognition of their unpaid service, the Ministry regularly invites the consuls to Denmark for a joint meeting with both professional activities and official events.

An honorary consul is appointed in their own capacity and typically holds an independent profession alongside the role. Often the consul is, for example, a business owner or lawyer, and can provide facilities for the consulate's work.
