Crown Princess Victoria visited Lombok as UN ambassador

Crown Princess Victoria is on a five-day visit to Indonesia as a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Development Programme. On Saturday she arrived on Lombok, where she is looking at reconstruction after natural disasters, sea turtle conservation and sustainable forestry.

Crown Princess Victoria is on a five-day official visit to Indonesia in her role as Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP. On Saturday 5 September she arrived on the island of Lombok, where she was received by Governor Lalu M. Iqbal of the province of West Nusa Tenggara.

The Crown Princess is travelling with Vice Minister Febrian A. Ruddyard. On arrival she was given a pink traditionally woven scarf to wear over her shoulders, a customary welcome in the region.

• Rebuilding after natural disasters

The main theme of the stay on Lombok is how infrastructure is rebuilt following natural disasters. Among other things, the Crown Princess saw a photographic exhibition documenting the damage and the work carried out afterwards.

Lombok was struck by a series of powerful earthquakes in the summer of 2018. Several hundred people lost their lives, and a large number of buildings were destroyed or damaged.

• Sea turtles and sustainable forestry

On Lombok the Crown Princess also visited a sea turtle conservation centre, and she met representatives of indigenous communities working in sustainable forestry.

Lombok lies east of Bali and west of Sumbawa. Victoria has been a UNDP Goodwill Ambassador since 2020, with the UN Sustainable Development Goals as her main brief.

• Home for the funeral in Oslo

According to the Swedish court's programme, the visit to Indonesia runs until Monday 7 September and covers both Jakarta and Lombok.

On Wednesday 9 September Crown Princess Victoria is listed among the Swedish royals attending King Harald's funeral in Oslo Cathedral.
