King Charles Arrives at Balmoral for the Summer

King Charles has arrived at Balmoral for his summer stay. The King was welcomed by a Guard of Honour, greeted the Shetland pony Cruachan IV, and presented the first two members of the revived Balmoral Highlanders.
King Charles has arrived at Balmoral in Scotland for his traditional summer stay. The King was welcomed by a Guard of Honour formed by The Royal Regiment of Scotland, and also got to greet an old friend: Corporal Cruachan IV, the regiment's Shetland pony mascot.

This year's arrival ceremony also offered a piece of history: the first two members of the revived Balmoral Highlanders took part. The King has re-established this tradition-rich unit, which was disbanded in 1936. Both of the new Highlanders are employees of the Balmoral Estate, and they will also take part in the Braemar Gathering, the famous Highland games, in September.

The King has already had a busy August in Scotland. He attended the Castle of Mey Games, met the Assynt Mountain Rescue team, and visited the communities of Halkirk and Castletown, where he among other things opened a distillery housed in a restored former mill building.

Balmoral has been the British royal family's summer residence since the days of Queen Victoria, and the royal family traditionally spends late summer and early autumn at the estate in Aberdeenshire.
