In recent weeks the King has received cortisone treatment for haemolytic anaemia, a condition in which red blood cells break down faster than normal. The treatment has caused fluid retention in his body, which now requires hospital treatment.
The King is on sick leave for two weeks, and Crown Prince Haakon is serving as regent during this period. This means the Crown Prince carries out the King's constitutional duties, including presiding over the Council of State, while his father is on sick leave.
