The Spanish Royal House

The House of Bourbon has ruled Spain since 1700, except for two republican periods. King Felipe VI is Spain's current monarch.

History

The House of Bourbon came to Spain in 1700 when Philip V, grandson of Louis XIV of France, ascended the Spanish throne. The dynasty has experienced turbulent times, including two republics and a civil war.

From Alfonso XIII to Today

King Alfonso XIII went into exile in 1931 when the Second Republic was proclaimed. After the civil war and Franco's dictatorship, the monarchy was restored in 1975 with Juan Carlos I as king.

King Felipe VI ascended the throne in 2014 after his father Juan Carlos I abdicated. He is married to Queen Letizia, a former journalist.
