Queen Sonja

Queen Sonja was born Sonja Haraldsen on 4 July 1937 in Oslo, the daughter of a merchant in the Vinderen district. She first trained in dressmaking and fashion in Switzerland, and later took a university degree in French, English literature and art history at the University of Oslo.

Her meeting with Crown Prince Harald in 1959 began one of the most talked-about love stories in Norwegian history. Because she was not of royal descent, the couple kept their relationship secret for nine years, while the question of a commoner marriage was debated both in government and in public. In the end Harald made it clear to his father that he would marry no one else. On 29 August 1968 they married in Oslo Cathedral, and with that the monarchy opened to a new era.

When King Olav died in January 1991, she became Queen of Norway, the first since Queen Maud died in 1938. Together with the King she was blessed in Nidaros Cathedral that summer.

As queen she has left a strong mark on Norwegian art and culture. She is behind the Queen Sonja Print Award, an international prize for graphic art, and the Queen Sonja Art Stable, which turned the old stables at the Palace into a public gallery. She is an active photographer herself and has held her own exhibitions. Outdoor life is just as close to her heart, and she is known for long mountain hikes in the Norwegian landscape.

Following King Harald's death on 28 August 2026, she is not Norway's reigning monarch. She was queen as the King's consort, not as heir to the throne, and the crown therefore passed directly to their son, King Haakon VIII. Queen Sonja retains the title of queen and her place in the royal family, but holds no constitutional role.
