Queen Margrethe honoured by Alt for damerne

The Danish weekly magazine Alt for damerne has given Queen Margrethe its Honorary Award to mark the magazine's 80th anniversary. The award was presented in private at Fredensborg Palace.

Queen Margrethe has received the Honorary Award of the Danish weekly magazine Alt for damerne. The award was given to mark the magazine's 80th anniversary, and the citation says the Queen has been a role model for girls and women for more than 50 years.

The presentation itself took place in private at Fredensborg Palace on September 24. The magazine's editor-in-chief Heidi Frederikke Sigdal presented the award together with the artist and clothing designer Nikoline Liv Andersen. The award was announced when the anniversary was celebrated at the Opera House in Copenhagen on October 3.

The citation

The citation states that since she came to the throne in 1972, the Queen has shown generations of women that no task is too great, with "impressive clarity, a great intellect and admirable creativity". It goes on to say that her "strong personality and courage to express herself through art, craft and fashion have shown girls and women that one should dare to be oneself".

Editor-in-chief Sigdal described the presentation this way: "Presenting the Honorary Award to Her Majesty Queen Margrethe was a very special and moving moment. Sitting there entirely in private with Her Majesty at Fredensborg Palace is something I will never forget."

An embroidered portrait

Nikoline Liv Andersen presented the original of the work "Queen Margrethe", an embroidery that also appears on the cover of the anniversary issue. The work shows the Queen in profile, with embroidered daisies laid over the drawing.

The daisy is a recurring theme. The Queen wore a pink and red checked jacket for the occasion, with a daisy brooch on the lapel and matching earrings. Daisy is the Queen's nickname within the family.

About the magazine

Alt for damerne was first published in 1946 and is one of Denmark's oldest weekly magazines for women. Other awards were also presented during the anniversary celebration at the Opera House: Margrethe Vestager received the Søstersind Prize, while the fashion award Guldknappen went to the label Gestuz.

Queen Margrethe abdicated on January 14, 2024, after 52 years on the throne. She turns 87 in April.
