The portrait was taken by photographer Matt Porteous at Kensington Palace, shortly after Trooping the Colour in June. The young prince poses in a navy suit and white shirt, and the photograph makes it clear that the young heir is growing up.

George is the eldest of Prince William and Princess Kate's three children, and is second in line to the British throne, after his father. With his 13th birthday he is officially a teenager, a small milestone for the royal family too, which has gradually included him in more official occasions, from Trooping the Colour to the World Cup final.
