The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh began a three-day official visit to Portugal, with the first day in the capital, Lisbon. The visit highlights the long historical ties between the United Kingdom and Portugal.

The couple were received by Lisbon's mayor, Carlos Moedas. They then visited the Portuguese National Archive, where they opened an exhibition about the Treaty of Windsor, the historic agreement regarded as one of the world's oldest alliances still in force between two countries.

Later in the day, the couple attended a garden party at the residence of the British ambassador in Lisbon.
