King Harald delivered his traditional New Year's speech from the Royal Palace on New Year's Eve with a clear message of unity, responsibility and gratitude as we enter 2026.
The King particularly highlighted that 2026 is the 'total defense year' - when community and solidarity become more important than ever. He emphasized that we are all part of our everyday democracy, and that it is worth defending - every day.

'Our best civilian protection in peace, crisis and in the worst case war, is a population that stands together and is willing to contribute - each in their own way,' the King said.
King Harald also expressed joy that the Norwegian men's national football team has qualified for the World Cup - for the first time in 28 years. This was a brighter point in a speech that also touched on serious topics.

The speech marked the end of a challenging year for the Norwegian Royal House. Queen Sonja was admitted to Rikshospitalet with atrial fibrillation during a ski trip in January 2025 and later had a pacemaker implanted. Crown Princess Mette-Marit's lung disease has deteriorated dramatically.

Despite these challenges, the King showed optimism for the year ahead. He thanked Norwegians for community and warmth, and encouraged everyone to take care of each other.
King Harald, who turns 89 in February, has no plans to abdicate and continues to carry out his royal duties with dedication.
