King Haakon VIII took the throne on August 28, 2026, following his father's death. He was born in 1973. He studied political science at Berkeley and served in the Royal Norwegian Navy. In 2001, he married Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby in a wedding that united the nation. Together they have children Ingrid Alexandra and Sverre Magnus, as well as Marius from Mette-Marit's previous relationship. The King is engaged in sustainability, mental health and youth issues. As crown prince he represented Norway at international occasions and carried out an increasing number of royal duties on behalf of his father, and he served as regent during the King's illness in the summer of 2026. The family lives at Skaugum in Asker.
