A week has passed since newly released Epstein documents revealed extensive communication between the Crown Princess and the convicted financier. Mette-Marit is mentioned nearly four hundred times in the documents.
"I wish to offer a deep apology for my friendship with Jeffrey Epstein. It is important for me to say sorry to all of you I have disappointed. Some of the content in the messages between Epstein and me does not represent the person I wish to be. I also apologize for the situation I have put the royal house in, especially the King and Queen," the Crown Princess states.

The Palace emphasizes that the Crown Princess strongly distances herself from Epstein's abuse and criminal actions, and that she deeply regrets not understanding earlier what kind of person he was.
"The Crown Princess wishes to explain herself more fully, but she cannot do so now. She is in an extremely challenging situation and hopes for understanding that she needs time to collect herself," the royal house statement reads.

The communication between the Crown Princess and Epstein spans several years. In the emails, they discuss literature and travel plans, among other things. The Crown Princess also stayed at Epstein's residence in Palm Beach for four days in 2013.
Several organizations that have the Crown Princess as patron have commented on the matter in the past week.
