Crown Prince Haakon presented the 2026 Abel Prize to German mathematician Gerd Faltings at a formal ceremony in the University's Aula in Oslo. The Abel Prize is considered one of the world's most prestigious awards in mathematics.

Faltings is affiliated with the Max-Planck-Institut für Mathematik in Bonn. He is being honoured for his contributions in arithmetic geometry and number theory.

In connection with the event, the Crown Prince also answered questions from the press about the situation of Crown Princess Mette-Marit. He said she "has become somewhat worse" and uses oxygen daily, adding that it "helps to some extent, but it is not a complete solution".
The Crown Prince also commented on the matter of the Crown Princess's earlier contact with Jeffrey Epstein. He pointed to three main reasons why she ended the contact: that Epstein used her name for his own social gain, a feeling that he did not have her best interests at heart, and warnings from others that he was not a good person.
