The King and Queen attended the ceremonial State Opening of Parliament at the Palace of Westminster, formally marking the start of the parliamentary year.
The King and Queen attended the State Opening of Parliament at the Palace of Westminster. The ceremonial event formally marks the beginning of each parliamentary year and is the only regular occasion when the three constituent parts of Parliament, the Sovereign, the House of Lords and the House of Commons, meet together.

This was the third occasion on which His Majesty has opened Parliament as Sovereign. Having arrived by carriage procession from Buckingham Palace, The King delivered a speech written by the Government, setting out the legislative agenda for the coming year.

The King wore the Imperial State Crown and the Robe of State during the ceremony, while The Queen wore the George IV State Diadem. The speech was delivered from the throne in the House of Lords chamber before members of both houses.
