Royal Physician: The King's General Condition Is Good

The King's personal physician Bjørn Bendz reports that King Harald is responding well to treatment, but stresses that the hospitalisation is serious.

On Wednesday, Queen Sonja arrived by car outside Hospital Universitario Hospiten Sur in Tenerife. Shortly afterwards, the King's personal physician Bjørn Bendz arrived.

The physician stated on Wednesday afternoon: "The King's general condition is good, and he is responding well to treatment. The infection originates from a skin infection in one of his legs. The King will remain in hospital for a few more days for observation and further treatment."

Bendz also stressed the seriousness of the situation: "When someone who is nearly 90 years old is admitted with an infection, it is serious. It is important that we have a thorough overview and control of his health before the King is discharged – even though his condition is stable now."

King Harald (89) is on a planned multi-week winter holiday in Tenerife with Queen Sonja. He was admitted to Hospital Universitario Hospiten Sur on Tuesday evening. The Palace has announced that a further update on the King's health will be provided on Thursday afternoon.
