The birthday was spent working for the royal house. When her sister-in-law Queen Sonja opened this year's exhibition at the Art Stables at the Palace, Princess Astrid was there, as she has been many times before. The Queen took the opportunity to hail her sister-in-law as "the oldest princess in the world".

Princess Astrid became Norway's First Lady at just 22 years of age, when her mother Crown Princess Märtha passed away in 1954. For 14 years she represented the royal house and Norway at home and abroad, until Crown Prince Harald married Sonja Haraldsen in 1968.

Her brother King Harald has described Princess Astrid as boundlessly loyal. She is serving her third king: first King Haakon, then King Olav and now King Harald. At 94 years of age, she still holds twelve patronages, chairs the Crown Princess Märtha Memorial Fund and carried out 17 official engagements last year.

The princess also brought her four-legged companion Wilma to the evening engagement. The little dog sat in the 94-year-old's lap, looking around the room filled with invited guests and press.
