This is the order of service in Oslo Cathedral

The Royal House has published the order of service for the funeral of King Harald V in Oslo Cathedral. Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden will read the Prayer of Saint Francis in Swedish, and early in the service the whole nation will observe a minute's silence.

• Bells, procession and silence

The service opens with the ringing of the bells, the procession and the prelude. All who are able stand and remain standing until after the silence.

The choir then sings the choral hymn No stig vår song, written by Edvard Hoem with music by Håkon Berge. The hymn was composed for the 70th birthdays of King Harald and Queen Sonja in 2007.

Then comes the silence. The nation observes one minute of silence, beginning and ending with three tolls of the bell. Afterwards all are seated, and the hymn Eg veit i himmerik ei borg is sung, verses 1 to 3 and 10.

• Eulogies and candle lighting

After the apostolic greeting, the opening words and an opening prayer taken from Psalm 90, the President of the Storting Masud Gharahkhani and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre give eulogies.

Candles are then lit by representatives of different faiths and life stances: Else-Britt Nilsen for Christians, Nancy Herz for humanists, Ani Chökyi for Buddhists, Rachel Mizrachi for Jews and Bushra Ishaq for Muslims. The candles are lit in gratitude for King Harald's life and service, for all that gathers people, for human warmth and laughter, and for diversity in fellowship.

• Jørgen Hattemaker

Åge Aleksandersen on vocals and guitar, Tuva Syvertsen on vocals and fiddle and Andreas Aase on guitar perform Alf Prøysen's Jørgen Hattemaker, with music by Bjarne Amdahl.

The act of remembrance concludes with the Presiding Bishop commending the memory of King Harald V to God's eternal peace.

• Readings in Northern Sami and Nynorsk

The Gospel of John, chapter 10, is read in Northern Sami. The choir then sings Psalm 121, with music by Arild Sandvold.

After that comes a reading from the First Epistle to the Corinthians, chapter 13, in Nynorsk: the passage on love being patient and never ending.

The readings are given by Mathis Eira, Vice Chairman of the Sámi Church Council, and Ameli Isungset Agbota, actor at Det Norske Teatret. The programme does not say which of them reads which passage.

• The sermon and the Song of Simeon

A sermon follows the readings. The programme does not name the preacher.

Then come the prayers, in which the choir sings the Song of Simeon, Simeona lávlla in Northern Sami, also known as the Nunc dimittis. The music is by Kjell Habbestad, opus 120 from 2026, and receives its world premiere in the cathedral. The choir sings it in three languages: Northern Sami, Latin and Nynorsk. The text is taken from Luke 2:29 to 32.

• Crown Princess Victoria reads the prayer

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden reads the Prayer of Saint Francis. The programme states that the prayer is read in Swedish.

This is followed by the prayer of commendation, in which King Harald is commended into God's hands.

Then Abide with me is sung, in a new arrangement by Lars Andreas Aspesæter. The hymn is sung in English, verses 1 to 3 by soloist and choir, verses 4 and 5 by all. The soloist is Hillari Alison Conlu.

• The Lord's Prayer, the committal and the Royal Anthem

After the hymn the Lord's Prayer is said. The programme states that it is said by each person in their own language.

At the committal all who are able stand and remain standing until the end of the service. After the praise, the first verse of the Royal Anthem, Gud, sign vår konge god, is sung in an arrangement by Oddgeir Kjetilstad.

The blessing is followed by a responsorium with music by Marcus André Berg, receiving its world premiere. Finally Deilig er jorden is sung, before the postlude and the procession out to Under Himlens vide Tag, also a world premiere by Berg.

• Ministers and musicians

Presiding Bishop Olav Fykse Tveit and the Bishop of Oslo, Sunniva Gylver, are the ministers. The hosts are Dean Pål Kristian Balstad, Parish Pastor Valborg Orset Stene, cathedral pastors Morten Andreas Øyan-Carlmark and Ellen Aasland Reinertsen, and Caroline Hauglid-Formo, Pastor for Sámi Church Life in southern Norway.

The Oslo Cathedral Choir is conducted by cathedral organist Oddgeir Kjetilstad, while leading cathedral organist Marcus André Berg plays the organ. The Norwegian Radio Orchestra takes part, together with baritone Halvor Festervoll Melien, trombone, trumpet and flugelhorn.
