New photo series from the Palace: the royal family looks out at the sea of flowers

On Monday afternoon the Norwegian Royal House shared a new series of photographs from the days following King Harald's death. One of them shows five members of the royal family gathered at a window inside the Palace, looking out towards the Palace Square.

In the photograph, Prince Sverre Magnus, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra, Queen Sonja, Queen Mette-Marit and King Haakon stand close together at the window, turned away from the camera. Outside lies the square where thousands of people have gathered in recent days.

Since King Harald died on Friday, many thousands have come to the Palace. They have laid flowers, flags, candles, messages and drawings in memory of the King. The sea of flowers has grown day by day, in the rain and in the evening dark.

• "Thank you so much"

King Haakon thanked the public in his first address as monarch on Saturday evening.

"It has been a powerful and moving experience to see the Palace Square fill with people, flowers, messages and candles. Thank you so much," he said.

It is still possible to lay flowers on the Palace Square, right up until the funeral on Wednesday 9 September. The Palace gardeners tend and tidy the flowers along the way, so that the sea of flowers can remain throughout the mourning period.
