King Harald's funeral will be held on Wednesday 9 September

The funeral service will be held in Oslo Cathedral at 1pm, led by Presiding Bishop Olav Fykse Tveit. Afterwards the coffin will be taken to Akershus, where King Harald will have a new double sarcophagus made for him and Queen Sonja.

The date falls within the week Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre pointed to earlier on Sunday, when he said the King would be laid to rest "the week after next".
• What the ceremony will look like
The funeral will be led by the Presiding Bishop of the Church of Norway, Olav Fykse Tveit. Oslo's Bishop Sunniva Gylver, cathedral organist Marcus André Berg and the Oslo Cathedral Choir will take part.
The service follows the Church of Norway's funeral liturgy, the church's standard order with prayers, hymns, biblical texts and an address.
The King's coffin will be carried from the Palace to Oslo Cathedral. After the service the procession continues to Akershus Castle Church, where a private memorial gathering will be held.
Much of the programme has not yet been made public, but the funeral is expected to follow the traditions of King Olav V and King Haakon VII. The coffin will most likely be carried along Karl Johans gate, with the family and other guests walking behind.

From the cathedral the coffin will be taken to Akershus Fortress, where King Harald will be placed in the Royal Mausoleum. He will have a new double sarcophagus, made for him and Queen Sonja.
• The Palace Chapel opens on Tuesday
The Palace Chapel opens to the public at 2pm on Tuesday 1 September for those who wish to say a last farewell. It will be possible to file past the coffin until 6pm on the day before the funeral.
• Guests from around the world
Senior guests from around the world are expected. The Danish royal couple have already confirmed they will attend.

When King Olav was buried in 1991, heads of state and royals from 103 nations attended, and 1,500 police officers in uniform and plain clothes were on duty. VG described the security operation at the time as the largest in Norwegian history. An extensive operation is expected this time as well.
